he 2002 cult-classic film Paid in Full is set for a television adaptation, and the announcement has ignited immediate controversy within the hip-hop community. On Monday, 50 Cent took to Instagram to reveal that he acquired the rights to the film and is developing it into a premium TV series.
“I now have the rights to PAID IN FULL, I’m developing it into a premium TV show. If you like Godfather of Harlem, you’re gonna love this,” 50 Cent wrote, sharing the film’s original poster. He also announced that Cam’ron, who portrayed Rico in the original movie—a character inspired by Harlem drug figure Alpo Martinez—will serve as executive producer alongside him. “Cam set to executive produce along side me, if you want in, get at him, I’m out the country,” 50 Cent added.
The news, however, did not sit well with Damon Dash, the Roc-A-Fella co-founder and one of the driving forces behind Paid in Full’s original release. Dash, who has long celebrated the film as a hallmark of his creative and executive achievements, expressed his displeasure publicly on Instagram.
“I wanna congratulate him for making 50 his new boss. So, congratulations, Cam, 50’s your new boss,” Dash said in a video post. He doubled down in the caption, writing: “Congratulations on making @50cent your new boss @mr_camron ? wish yall the best of luck.”
Cam’ron, known for his humor and sharp comebacks, responded casually in the post’s comments. “U really turned into a chatty patty damn,” he wrote, dismissing Dash’s criticism. “Tagging me every post. N**** get cut out of tv series everyday B, u be ight. You only doing this for clicks… You welcome. For now on my lil n****. Lolol. Go to the store for me real quick.”
Adding to the tension, Dash alleged that Cam’ron’s circle attempted to reach out to his son, Boogie Dash, though he clarified that Cam’ron did not personally contact him. Dash suggested the rapper was aware of the outreach, which fueled his frustration further.
Despite the drama, industry insiders are already intrigued by the prospect of the series. Paid in Full, which also starred Mekhi Phifer and Wood Harris, remains a seminal crime drama and a street-culture touchstone. With 50 Cent’s track record as a producer of hit shows—including Power and its spinoffs—paired with Cam’ron’s Harlem roots, the adaptation could attract significant attention.
