Erykah Badu found herself in a tough spot during her recent appearance on Drink Champs, when hosts asked her to pick between two lyrical heavyweights: OutKast’s André 3000 and The Roots’ Black Thought. The moment quickly turned lighthearted but layered, as Badu weighed her deep personal and artistic connections to both men.

“Black Thought or Andre 3000? Now you’re messing with my child support,” she joked, immediately acknowledging her history with André 3000, with whom she shares a son. Laughing, she admitted the question was a setup, saying she wanted “no parts in this” but ultimately couldn’t dodge the comparison.

When pressed, Badu opened up about why she leans toward André 3000. “I may be one of André 3000’s biggest fans outside of being family,” she explained. “Super inspiring. I lean more toward the creative side of art and I am inspired so much by that. So, I’m going to have to say 3,000.” Still, she gave respect to Black Thought (real name Tariq Trotter), acknowledging that picking between the two is nearly impossible.

The exchange showcased Badu’s signature humor and honesty, as well as her deep appreciation for creativity and artistry. Even as she sided with Andre 3000, she made it clear that both rappers hold a special place in hip-hop history.
