Former Army Ranger Nicholas Irving shared his perspective on President Trump’s recent deployment of 1,700 National Guard troops across 19 states, aimed at bolstering the Department of Homeland Security amid a crackdown on illegal immigration and rising crime. While initially unarmed, the troops are now equipped, signifying an intensified approach. Irving expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of this move, warning it risks sliding toward authoritarianism and martial law. He questioned the National Guard’s role if local law enforcement is already struggling, suggesting they might mainly serve as a symbolic presence rather than an effective crime deterrent. Notably, Irving pointed out that while some backing drastic actions to clean up the streets, there’s concern about potential overreach. He also acknowledged the political dimension, arguing Trump might be using the deployment to shift media focus from controversial topics, noting the move has succeeded in dominating headlines.
