Nearly four years after the tragic death of Memphis rap star Young Dolph, the man once accused of orchestrating the killing has been found not guilty on all charges. On Wednesday, a jury acquitted Hernandez Govan of both first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, clearing him of allegations that he organized the fatal shooting.
The decision came after only about three hours of deliberations. Judge Jennifer Mitchell cautioned the courtroom to remain composed as the verdict was read, acknowledging the highly emotional weight of the case. As the not-guilty verdicts were announced, Govan broke down in tears, embracing his attorneys in an emotional scene. Facing the possibility of life in prison, Govan will instead walk out of court a free man.
The verdict surprised many observers, especially given the testimony of Cornelius Smith — a self-admitted gunman already convicted in the case. Smith’s cooperation was key in the conviction of Justin Johnson, another shooter involved in Dolph’s murder.
Despite Smith serving as the prosecution’s star witness against Govan, the jury was not convinced he masterminded the hit. While the prosecution spent two and a half days presenting their case, Govan’s defense reportedly lasted about an hour, yet proved enough to sway jurors.
Young Dolph, born Adolph Thornton Jr., was shot and killed in November 2021, sending shockwaves through Memphis and the hip-hop community at large. Initially labeled the “mastermind” of the crime, Govan’s arrest came a year later.
Today’s acquittal marks a dramatic turn in the lengthy legal process. While Govan and his supporters celebrated in court, many await the response from Dolph’s family and community, who continue to mourn the loss of the beloved rapper.
