Gillie Da Kid recently joined Carmelo Anthony on the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast, where the Philly rapper-turned-podcaster addressed his headline-grabbing feud with former NFL MVP Cam Newton. According to Gillie, the whole thing started with football — and spiraled because neither side wanted to back down.
The spark? Cam Newton reportedly said Jalen Hurts wasn’t a top 10 quarterback. Gillie, a passionate Eagles fan, fired back by pointing out Hurts had accomplished something Cam hadn’t — making it to the Super Bowl. “As a fan, that’s it,” Gillie explained. “He went to a bunch of personal [stuff]… I’m Petty Murphy, man. Eddie Murphy’s nephew.”
Things escalated when Cam claimed that Gillie was twerking in a Ludacris music video. Gillie laughed off the claim, saying it wasn’t him — and took issue with Cam using his platform to push something he knew wasn’t true. “You trying to build your platform up… but you ain’t gonna get no clicks and likes over here,” he said, adding a jab about Cam’s signature outfits.
While Melo tried to play peacekeeper, Gillie made it clear he doesn’t have real animosity toward Newton — but he’s standing firm on his football takes. “Don’t tell me what I can’t talk about just because you played in the NFL,” Gillie said, citing Hurts’ higher completion percentage and win record. He also dismissed the argument that Hurts’ success is solely due to having elite teammates, pointing out that no one wins championships with bad players.
The conversation eventually turned to Gillie’s now-famous oversized hat business, which he described as a multimillion-dollar marketing machine. He even pitched Melo on getting custom hats made for his Hall of Fame party, noting that “everybody” would want a photo with one.
So, is this beef deep? Gillie says no — but he’s not one to let a shot go unanswered. “I speak football. You mad at me because I’m speaking football,” he said. “We two grown men… but corny is corny.”
