Eddie Murphy has been in the game long enough to cross paths with just about every major star of the past few decades—but don’t expect him to brag about it. In a recent interview with Complex's Speedy Morman, the legendary comedian and actor opened up about some of his most memorable (and surprisingly low-key) celebrity interactions, sharing stories that are equal parts funny, relatable, and classic Eddie.
One of the most unexpected gems came from his time on the set of Dreamgirls, where he starred alongside Beyoncé and Jennifer Hudson. At the time, Murphy was going through a divorce and said he was basically on “automatic pilot” during filming. Still, one quiet behind-the-scenes moment stuck with him. “Jennifer had some ash between her fingers and she was licking her fingers and getting the ash like that,” he recalled. “Beyoncé grabbed me and said, ‘Oh, girl, don’t do that. I’ll get you some cream.’” Though the moment went unnoticed by the two women, Murphy said it was his standout Beyoncé memory. “This might be the first time I’ve shared that with anybody,” he added with a grin.
When asked about meeting NBA legends, Murphy said he’s only met LeBron James once—and it was during a night out he described as a comeback moment after his divorce. “Me and the whole crew went out to the club again. We were the old dudes in the club,” he laughed. “And that one night, I seen LeBron James coming out of the club and met him. That’s the only time I met him.” As for Michael Jordan? “Never met him,” he admitted. “I’ve never met a lot of people.”
Despite being one of the most recognizable names in entertainment, Murphy says he doesn’t frequent many Hollywood events or parties. “I don’t do a lot of show business stuff,” he said. “So whenever I do go somewhere, people are always like, ‘Hey, I never saw you before.’” Even people who’ve been in the industry for decades often tell him it’s their first time seeing him in person.
And what about that iconic star he received on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1996? Murphy says he hasn’t been back to check on it. “I know it’s outside the W Hotel, by the Charlie Chaplin plaque on the wall,” he said. But don’t expect to catch him out there polishing it. “You wouldn’t give a s*** after a while,” he joked.
