Following a dramatic weekend at the USATF Championships, sprinter Christian Coleman is speaking out about the arrest of his girlfriend, Sha’Carri Richardson, after a domestic incident at a Seattle airport.
Richardson, the reigning 100 meters world champion, was detained at SeaTac Airport on the evening of July 27 after a dispute with Coleman. She was released the following day. While details of the altercation remain limited, Coleman addressed the situation during a post-race interview, calling it an unfortunate moment for them both.
“Personally, I feel like it was just a sucky situation all around,” Coleman said. “I don't feel as if she should’ve been arrested. People have discussions and emotions — we’re all human.”
Rather than inflaming the situation, Coleman leaned into compassion and accountability. “She has things she needs to work on. Of course, so do I. So does everyone,” he explained. “But I try to approach life with grace, mercy, and love.”
He went on to criticize the negativity surrounding the incident and expressed frustration with how the narrative has been shaped online. “I hate the narrative,” he said. “Talking to the cop in Seattle, it really was nothing I could do.”
Despite the public scrutiny, Coleman praised Richardson's strength and resilience, both as a partner and a world-class athlete. “She’s the best female athlete in the world — I see it every day,” he said. “I watched her fall in February and walk it off like it was a cramp. She took a month and a half to rehab, came back, and was competing again in three weeks.”
He also offered perspective on his own challenges this season, including switching training groups and adjusting to a new environment. Still, he’s maintained his focus — and he credits some of that to the bond he shares with Richardson. “We’re just two dominant personalities,” he said. “And I know everything that’s happening is in God’s plan.”
As for what’s next, Coleman remains confident in Richardson’s ability to push through. “She’s had a tough journey this year, but she’s going to bounce back,” he said. “And I’m going to be good too. It is what it is.”
