Two years after the heartbreaking loss of his son, YNG Cheese, Gillie Da Kid is still navigating the pain of grief—but he’s not doing it alone. In a heartfelt gesture of support and brotherhood, Meek Mill recently surprised Gillie with a custom chain bearing a portrait of his late son, deepening the bond between two of Philadelphia’s most respected voices.

YNG Cheese, an aspiring rapper and the son of podcast host and rapper Gillie Da Kid, tragically passed away at the age of 25 after being shot in Philadelphia on July 20, 2023. The loss shook the city and the hip-hop community, but perhaps no one felt it more deeply than Gillie himself.

Just a few months after his son’s death, Gillie opened up on The Pivot Podcast in a raw, emotional interview that gave fans a glimpse into his grief. Breaking down in tears, he described the devastating moment he had to wash his son’s body. “It was the worst, but it was also the best because I became a man that day,” he said. “I thought I was a man because I did man s***… paid bills… took care of my family... but that day changed me.”

From the beginning, Meek Mill was one of the first to publicly support Gillie during his loss. “RIP CHEESE GOD BLESS YOUR SOUL!” Meek posted shortly after the tragedy. “It’s so f***ing hard to survive in Philadelphia—it’s a shame!”

That shared pain, combined with their deep Philly roots and history, has kept Meek and Gillie connected through the years. And this week, that bond was on full display when Gillie posted a video of Meek presenting him with a stunning iced-out pendant featuring an image of YNG Cheese.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Gillie hugged Meek and thanked him repeatedly for the thoughtful tribute. He later shared the moment with fans on Instagram, writing, “Love and appreciate you my brother @meekmill 😢😢💙 Miss u kiddo #LongLiveCheese.”
