Former NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas was arrested Wednesday (July 30) in Southern California in connection with an alleged illegal gambling operation.

According to federal prosecutors, Arenas and five co-defendants are accused of running high-stakes card games out of a rental property between September 2021 and July 2022. The group reportedly rented the residence specifically to host the games.

Each defendant faces two felony charges: one count of conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business and one count of operating an illegal gambling business. If convicted, they could face up to five years in prison for each count.

Among the others arrested is 49-year-old Yevgeni Gershman, who is suspected of having ties to an Israeli organized crime group. The additional defendants named in the indictment are 48-year-old Evgenni Tourevski, 52-year-old Allan Austria, 27-year-old Yarin Cohen, and 43-year-old Krachun (last name only listed in court documents).

Arenas is expected to appear in court later today. Updates will follow as more details become available.
