Mike Moy’s journey from a former gang associate to an NYPD officer is a compelling story of transformation and redemption. Sworn in on June 30, 1995, Moy graduated from the police academy nine months later and initially worked across various precincts before being posted to Chinatown—a place he knew intimately from his past. Reflecting on his assignment, Moy expressed initial apprehension about encountering old gang members from when he was involved with the Chinatown gang scene in the ‘80s and early ‘90s, which was dismantled by federal crackdowns by the mid-90s.

Moy's work in Chinatown had him crossing paths with familiar faces from his gang days, now seeing him as a figure of law and order. His unique vantage point allowed him to perceive the profound changes within the community he once knew. Despite his fears of recognition, especially during prisoner transports, Moy managed to navigate his duties effectively, demonstrating the significant impact of lifestyle and appearance change from a former gang affiliate to an upstanding police officer.
