Janice Turner, the mother of singer Sean Kingston, has been sentenced to five years in federal prison in connection with a multi-million dollar fraud scheme involving luxury goods, cars, and electronics. The sentencing took place at a federal courthouse in South Florida, where Turner appeared before a judge and asked for leniency—but ultimately received a sentence that landed between the recommendations of her defense and the prosecution.

Turner’s legal team had requested a three-year sentence, while prosecutors pushed for eight years behind bars. The judge settled on five, citing her prior criminal record as a contributing factor in the decision.

Prosecutors accused Turner and her son, Sean Kingston, of orchestrating a scheme that defrauded multiple businesses by acquiring high-end merchandise without payment. According to court documents, the pair are believed to have caused more than $3 million in damages, with 21 identified victims. Authorities reportedly seized several of the items from the Kingston family's Southwest Florida home.

In court, Turner expressed remorse, telling the judge, “I’m sorry. My intention was to keep my son afloat in this difficult industry. They used him and abused him. I am begging for mercy for me and my son.”

Despite her apology and claims that many of the defrauded businesses received their goods back, the judge remained concerned about her past criminal history, which includes a conviction from more than 16 years ago.

Turner’s daughter declined to speak to reporters after the sentencing, while supporters spoke to her character, describing her as someone known for helping those in need—including the homeless.

Her attorney confirmed that an appeal is underway and that Turner will be required to pay restitution, though the exact amount has yet to be determined.

Sean Kingston, who was not present in court, is also facing sentencing in connection with the same fraud case in the coming weeks.
