The entertainment world was struck with sadness following the unexpected death of actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner, best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show. Warner, who passed away at age 54, played the beloved middle child of the Huxtable family—a role that became a cultural touchstone during the show's successful run from 1984 to 1992.
In a recent interview with ABC News’ Linsey Davis, Bill Cosby—who portrayed Malcolm’s on-screen father, Cliff Huxtable—opened up about Warner’s passing and their long-standing bond, both on and off screen.
Cosby shared that the character of Theo was loosely based on his own son, Ennis Cosby, who was tragically murdered in 1997. Reflecting on Warner’s work ethic and demeanor, Cosby described him as "truthful" and someone who knew how to "walk away from a conversation without being rude."
“Malcolm did his best,” Cosby said. “He was always a great studier, and I enjoyed working with him very much.”
Although it was suggested during the interview that the two had not spoken recently, Cosby pushed back, insisting that Warner called him regularly.
“My reputation with him is—he doesn’t need to talk, he needs to listen,” Cosby said, adding that he often shared wisdom with Warner, drawing inspiration from his own grandfather. “I always thought that’s the kind of grandfather I would be.”
Cosby praised Warner’s professionalism and discipline as an actor, saying, “He would’ve been one of Spencer Tracy’s favorite actors. He never bumped into the furniture. He always knew his lines and always knew where to go.”
Warner's role as Theo Huxtable not only helped solidify The Cosby Show as one of television's most influential sitcoms but also endeared him to generations of viewers. His on-screen dynamic with Cosby was a highlight of the series—perhaps best exemplified by the iconic line, "I brought you into this world, and I can take you out," which still resonates with fans decades later.
Cosby's remarks come amid the backdrop of his controversial legacy. The actor and comedian was convicted of sexual assault in 2018 and served three years in prison before the conviction was overturned on appeal in 2021. Despite the legal battles and public fallout, Cosby maintains his innocence.
Still, his memories of working with Warner remain untouched by controversy.
“Malcolm was very professional,” Cosby said once more, reflecting on his former co-star's dedication to his craft and their enduring bond.
