Part 1: Mike Moy on Joining the Fuk Ching Gang After Dealing with Racist Bullying
--------
Former gang member Mike Moy opened up about his initiation into the Fuk Ching gang and his experiences as a teenager navigating gang life. At 16, Moy connected with 'Cambodian Peter,' a leader in the gang who recruited him during a time when the Fuk Ching were expanding their territory beyond Chinatown's main streets, into less occupied areas like Brooklyn. Moy detailed a blood ritual marking his official entry into the gang, an event that took place in an apartment decked with traditional offerings and incense, a simplified version of what's performed by triad members.
After joining, Moy's high school life drastically changed. Despite previous academic excellence, he attended less frequently, but still managed to graduate due to his strong past performance. His newfound gang affiliation transformed his demeanor. Moy recalled instantly confronting bullies on his return to school, signaling his shift in confidence and the power dynamics at play. At that time, New York City grappled with high crime rates, recording close to 2,400 homicides annually, a stark contrast to the reduced figures today.
