However, a focus group showed that audiences perceived his style as too harsh, albeit humorously so. “I dropped the intentional meanness and just started being myself,” Mathis said, recounting his shift back to genuine authenticity and natural humor. Despite this professional pivot, his personal encounter with Judge Judy was less than cordial. Upon seeing her at a restaurant, Judge Mathis approached, only to be completely ignored. This slight motivated him to use his time on television as a form of "television pettiness" aimed at surpassing her success.
