Reflecting on his challenging upbringing in Detroit during the 1970s, Mathis explained that as a light-skinned boy living in the projects, he felt the need to overcompensate and gain a reputation for toughness. Mathis detailed his involvement in petty crimes and his subsequent arrest after being caught with a firearm in school. He was tried as an adult at 17, marking a critical turning point in his life. Despite suffering a gunshot wound at 13 during a robbery attempt, Mathis described this period as gaining his "stripes" and respect in his neighborhood rather than a signal to change his path.
