XXL revealed their 2025 Freshman Class on Tuesday (June 24), spotlighting a new wave of rising talent set to make waves in hip-hop. Headlining the list are GELO (LiAngelo Ball), Ray Vaughn of TDE, and Dallas-based rapper ian, all of whom have built strong buzz with breakout singles and co-signs from industry heavyweights.
Rounding out the class are 1900Rugrat, BabyChiefDoIt, EBK Jaaybo, Eem Triplin, LAZER DIM 700, Loe Shimmy, Nino Paid, Samara Cyn, and YTB Fatt—each representing different sounds and regions across the U.S. From gritty street anthems to melodic introspection, this year’s crop is one of the most sonically diverse in recent memory.
The list was curated by acclaimed producer Cardo Got Wings, best known for his work with Drake, Travis Scott, and Wiz Khalifa. His involvement added credibility to the selection process, though it didn’t shield the list from criticism. Some questioned the inclusion of GELO, noting that his rap career is still in its early stages. However, with a major label deal inked at Def Jam and a debut project on the way, GELO is poised to prove he belongs.
Several fans praised the list for shining a light on artists outside the mainstream algorithm. Samara Cyn’s lyrical prowess, Eem Triplin’s genre-bending production, and Ray Vaughn’s storytelling were particular standouts. As always, the Freshman cover is just the beginning—many will be watching closely to see who takes this moment and turns it into long-term success.
