Part 5: Nicholas Irving: The Last Thing Americans Want in Civil War are War Vets Who Miss Combat
Part 1: Nicholas Irving on Army Soldiers Being Put on Nocturnal Schedule, New Targets Every Night

--------

Ex-Army Ranger Nicholas Irving expressed deep disillusionment with the outcomes of the War on Terror. Reflecting on his time in service, Irving lamented how former adversaries, specifically the Taliban, have now ascended to power as the legitimate government in Afghanistan. This transformation, he noted, makes the sacrifices of soldiers feel undermined. Irving believes that the culmination of efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq were squandered by the government's approach to concluding these conflicts, which included leaving weapons and equipment in enemy hands.

Irving criticized the way veterans have been treated post-conflict, feeling discarded and their efforts trivialized. For many soldiers like himself, the war's supposed objectives and the fleeting domestic support were as transient as "bumper sticker deep." He highlighted that while the war's initial motives rallied national unity post-9/11, public interest quickly waned, leaving veterans questioning the true endgame and purpose behind their service.
