Jon Jones has officially called it a career. On Saturday night (June 21), the longtime UFC champion took to social media to announce his retirement from mixed martial arts after a legendary run.
"Today, I’m officially announcing my retirement from the UFC. This decision comes after a lot of reflection, and I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the journey I’ve experienced over the years," Jones wrote. He closed his heartfelt message by adding, "As I close this chapter of my life, I look forward to new opportunities and challenges ahead. MMA will always be a part of who I am, and I’m excited to see how I can continue to contribute to the sport and inspire others in new ways."
The news came just hours after UFC president Dana White confirmed Jones' retirement to reporters, saying, "Jon Jones called us last night and retired. Jon Jones is officially retired. Tom Aspinall is the heavyweight champion of the UFC."
Jones had previously hinted at walking away from the octagon during an appearance on the Full Send Podcast, where he admitted his passion for fighting had faded. “I don't want to say that I'm retired because fighting's in my blood,” he said. “Right now, I could really care less about fighting… I've punched and kicked enough people.”
Widely considered one of the greatest fighters in MMA history, Jones exits the sport with a storied legacy. The former light heavyweight king and reigning heavyweight champ leaves behind a dominant record, multiple title defenses, and a reputation as one of the most technically gifted athletes to ever enter the cage.
