A federal judge has denied a motion to release R. Kelly into home detention following explosive claims from his legal team alleging an assassination attempt against the disgraced singer.
According to Kelly’s attorneys, the singer recently overdosed on medication administered by prison staff, and they now allege that officials at the facility also solicited another inmate to murder Kelly in exchange for his release.
Despite the claims, U.S. District Court Judge Martha Pacold rejected the motion on Thursday (June 19), citing that she “lacks jurisdiction over this matter.”
Federal prosecutors swiftly dismissed the defense’s accusations in a scathing court response, calling them “deeply unserious and theatrical,” and “repugnant to the sentence that this Court imposed for deeply disturbing offenses.”
Kelly’s attorney, Beau Brindley, revealed that the team is now seeking a presidential pardon from Donald Trump. “President Trump has been fighting against this kind of criminal weaponization of the DOJ against public figures since he took office,” Brindley said. “And we will ask him to now stand up with us as we advance his fight — and as our client fears that he might be killed to cover up the corruption that we seek to expose.”
