According to a report from the Covington Police Department, officers responded to a disturbance at the Second Story Bar on West Seventh Street around 1 a.m., following reports of an altercation between a customer and an employee. Upon arrival, officers allegedly found Jones, 41, inside his vehicle attempting to leave the scene. Authorities claim he appeared visibly intoxicated and was acting aggressively, though specific details surrounding the alleged assault on an officer have not yet been made public.
Jones was taken into custody at the scene.
His agent, Peter Schaffer, issued a strong statement defending Jones and criticizing the officers’ actions, calling the arrest an example of “overzealous policing” and a reflection of deeper systemic issues in law enforcement.
“Adam did nothing wrong other than exercise his right to ask why he was being detained — a fundamental question that every citizen should be allowed to ask without fear of retaliation,” Schaffer stated.
“Initially, officers claimed he was being arrested for assault and then shifted to public intoxication (which, in itself, is not a crime in many jurisdictions unless it leads to dangerous behavior), and finally settled on disorderly conduct — simply for asking why he was being detained. This pattern of escalating and inconsistent charges is a clear abuse of authority and demonstrates a troubling trend of police officers prioritizing their own discretion over constitutional rights.”
Schaffer also addressed how Jones’ previous legal history is being used to frame public opinion, arguing that the former NFL player is being unfairly targeted.
“Adam, like every American, is innocent until proven guilty. Yet, once again, his past is being weaponized against him in the court of public opinion... Enough is enough. People should not be arrested for asking questions, and police should not be allowed to fabricate charges simply because they don’t like the tone of a conversation.”
Jones has faced multiple legal issues in the past, both during and after his NFL career, but his team insists this latest incident has been mischaracterized and mishandled. Schaffer concluded his statement by calling for a full and transparent investigation into the arrest.
As of now, Jones has not issued a personal statement, and no body camera footage or further police details have been released.
