Brian McKnight is speaking out for the first time following the tragic news that his 32-year-old son, Niko, passed away after battling colon cancer.
Brian's brother, Claude McKnight, took to social media to react to the news, and after praising Niko's talents as a photographer and artist, he touched on Niko being estranged from his father. In 2024, Brian spoke about his relationship with his four oldest children—Brian, Jr., Niko, Brianna and Clyde— whom he referred to as “products of sin.” McKnight stated that “In order to live a life that you love, you have to get rid of the evil and the negativity — even if that evil and negativity is related [to you].”
While speaking about Niko's relationship with his father, Claude stated, “I wanted to post this about Niko, about his legacy, about how amazing he is, not about what some of you may have heard about family drama that has existed for quite some time, in our family,” he said in the video. “I don’t know exactly what was going on there, I know what I’ve seen. I know what I’ve heard from all parties involved…a lot of things didn’t get resolved.”
Claude McKnight added, “I know that kid had a lot inside, a lot eating at him for a long, long time. I may have contributed to what happened with him, what I do know is he’s out of pain now. I just want to uplift that young man.”
Brian reacted to Claude's message with his own video, where he stated, "Big, big thanks to Claude McKnight’s tasteless and self-aggrandizing announcement on TikTok — that frankly, was not his to make. In my opinion, he inserted himself and used Niko’s death as an opportunity, instead of letting him pass with respect and dignity. It has instead, turned into a circus. A mockery of a life now lost, making this tragedy into a reality show-type drama."
Brian went on to speak about having "the number one oncologist on deck for him and a team of specialists on standby, with private care in our home," but he said that Niko and his mother declined his offer.
Speaking more about his ex-wife, Brian stated, "To the self-proclaimed ‘mama bear,’ may God have mercy on your soul for not allowing him to accept that help and now allowing him to use that line of communication. There is great comfort in knowing God knows the truth and totality of the whole story."
