Part 4: Skipp Townsend: C***k Made Gangs Territorial, I Had a Dope House in 60s & They Burned It
Part 1: Skipp Townsend on Crips Co-Founder Tookie: Soon As We Saw Him Coming, We Were Gone
--------
Skipp Townsend delved into the contrasting empires of two notorious figures: Freeway Rick Ross and Michael “Harry-O” Harris. Townsend, who was familiar with the circles they influenced, highlighted the sheer scale and impact of their operations. Harry-O, although not personally known to Townsend, was depicted as operating at a high level, financially supporting a number of ventures, including Denzel Washington's first play and the establishment of Death Row Records.
Conversely, Freeway Rick Ross was noted for his more understated approach. Despite his wealth, Rick maintained a low profile, avoiding flashy displays and public attention. Townsend described Rick as humble, likening his operation to a "24-hour liquor store," operating with constant cash flow. This approach, combined with his strategic partnerships, kept him under the radar, unlike the opulence of Harry-O’s affiliates. Townsend also pointed out how Rick, unlike other dealers, ran his operations collaboratively, prioritizing business over violence and greed.
