Federal prosecutors have raised concerns over high-profile attorney Mark Geragos, accusing him of improperly commenting on Sean “Diddy” Combs’ ongoing criminal case. Geragos discussed aspects of the trial on his podcast 2 Angry Men, which he co-hosts with TMZ founder Harvey Levin, prompting prosecutors to request a formal admonishment from the court.
Although Geragos is not officially listed as part of Diddy's legal team, prosecutors contend that he is functioning as an advisor to the defense. During jury selection earlier this week, prosecutors observed him engaging with members of Combs' legal counsel.
In a letter submitted to the court, the prosecution argued that Geragos’ public remarks about the case violated legal standards that prohibit attorneys from making statements outside of court that could prejudice the proceedings. They referenced a recent podcast episode where Geragos discussed a controversial surveillance video—previously aired on CNN—showing Combs allegedly assaulting his former partner, Cassie Ventura.
Geragos reportedly criticized the prosecution's intent to use the footage during trial, calling it “character assassination” and asserting, “It’s a prosecution by proxy.” He acknowledged Combs' past behavior but emphasized that the current charges do not relate directly to the incident shown in the video.
The prosecutors emphasized that Geragos' proximity to the defense team, paired with his public commentary, could violate ethical rules regarding attorney conduct in active cases. They urged the court to take action to prevent further prejudicial statements.
Opening arguments in the trial are scheduled to begin on Monday. The proceedings are expected to span approximately eight weeks.
