According to Rolling Stone, Suge Knight has reached a $1.5 million settlement in the retrial of a civil case stemming from the 2015 death of Terry Carter.
The lawsuit was filed by Carter’s widow, Lillian Carter, and his two daughters, Nekaya and Crystal, after Knight ran over and killed Carter in the parking lot of Tam’s Burgers during a confrontation near the set of Straight Outta Compton. Knight appeared in court on Tuesday (April 29) and verbally agreed to the settlement, which awards $500,000 each to the three plaintiffs.
In a statement to Rolling Stone, Knight expressed remorse for the pain caused by the incident, though he denied any intentional wrongdoing.
“Terry was a friend of mine. It definitely wasn’t done intentionally. It wasn’t done to bring harm to him,” Knight said. “One of the reasons I settled [is] I got respect for Terry, so that means I’ve got respect for his family. … I didn’t want to put the family through more pain. It’s not that I did anything wrong—I never would have. But I do owe the family an apology because of this thing they had to go through.”
Lillian Carter also spoke to Rolling Stone, expressing her frustration with the outcome.
“I’m not happy with the outcome of it, at all,” she said. “But I don’t want to give him another opportunity to put on a clown show and act like a b****. Maybe somebody will shank him in jail.”
Knight is currently serving a 28-year prison sentence after pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter in Carter’s death.
