Drake’s legal battle with Universal Music Group (UMG) is escalating as the music giant moves to dismiss his lawsuit, calling it the actions of a "sore loser."
In its filing, UMG argued that Drake’s case is meritless, claiming the rapper is merely reacting to his widely speculated loss in a rap battle. “Drake lost a rap battle that he provoked and willingly participated in. Instead of accepting the loss like the unbothered rap artist he often claims to be, he has sued his own record label in a misguided attempt to salve his wounds. Plaintiff’s Complaint is utterly without merit and should be dismissed with prejudice,” the motion states.
Drake’s attorney, Michael J. Gottlieb, fired back at UMG’s claims, telling Variety, “UMG wants to pretend this is about a rap battle to distract its shareholders, artists, and the public from a simple truth: a greedy company is finally being held responsible for profiting from dangerous misinformation that has already led to multiple acts of violence. This motion is a desperate ploy by UMG to avoid accountability, but we have every confidence that this case will proceed and continue to uncover UMG’s long history of endangering, abusing, and exploiting its artists.”
With both sides digging in, the legal showdown between Drake and his longtime label appears far from over.
