Over the weekend, the music world mourned the loss of R&B and Neo Soul icon Angie Stone, who tragically passed away at the age of 63 following a devastating car accident.
Stone was traveling back to Atlanta from Alabama early Saturday morning (March 1) when the 2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van she was riding in overturned and was struck by a big rig. While others in the vehicle survived, Stone sadly did not.
In the wake of the heartbreaking news, Stone’s family released an official statement through The Weems Firm, based in Atlanta, expressing their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support.
"It is with heavy hearts that the children of R&B singer Angie Stone, along with her extended family, want to thank you all for your love and well wishes at what is an extremely difficult time."
The statement honored Stone’s legacy, emphasizing her role as an inspiration to Black women and her unwavering support for Black men—most notably reflected in her beloved song "Brotha." It also highlighted her dedication to philanthropy through her organization, Angel Stripes, the Angie Stone Foundation.
"Angie was an example for Black women and girls everywhere. She also loved and championed Black men with her number one hit, 'Brotha.' She believed in giving back to her fans and the community through her foundation. She lived and died doing what she loved most—music."
The family concluded by sharing how Stone’s deep faith guided her throughout her life:
"Her love of God and her faith led her to have a deep desire to share her belief in God and bring more people to Christ."
Angie Stone was a revered and Grammy-nominated artist, best known for her timeless hit "Wish I Didn’t Miss You." Her soulful voice, powerful lyrics, and unwavering dedication to her craft leave behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
