Rickey Carter of Atlanta has been sentenced to life in prison, plus an additional five years, for fatally shooting his longtime friend, Quinlan Parker, over a $35 debt. Carter was found guilty of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during a felony. The incident occurred in January 2022 at Parker's apartment, where an argument ensued, leading to Carter shooting Parker in the chest.

Despite claiming self-defense, evidence from Parker's stepdaughter's recording showed Carter backing away before firing. In a separate case, Kristel Candelario was also sentenced to life in prison without parole for the death of her 16-month-old child. Candelario left her daughter unattended at home while she vacationed for 10 days, resulting in the child's death from neglect. At her sentencing, Candelario expressed remorse for her actions but acknowledged the pain caused by her neglect.
