In an interview with Forbes, rapper Fat Joe shared some valuable advice for aspiring artists, or anyone experiencing success, about the dangers of trying to help everyone around you. Around the 17:48 mark, Fat Joe emphasized the importance of taking care of your family and community, but also warned against falling into a trap of trying to support too many people financially.
He spoke about his own experience of trying to help 30-40 people by buying them trucks and paying their rent and bills, only to realize that he was going broke in the process. Fat Joe highlighted the concept of survivor's guilt, where successful individuals feel responsible for lifting up everyone around them, even if not everyone shares the same vision or goals.
One particular story that Fat Joe shared was about a missed opportunity to receive a $2 million check from a company, all because he had too many people surrounding him at the time. The man with the check couldn't even get through the crowd to speak with Fat Joe, causing him to miss out on a potentially life-changing opportunity.
In another instance, Fat Joe had to sit down 40 people he had been taking care of for years and tell them that he was broke. Only five out of the 40 stayed by his side and offered their support, while the rest expressed a sense of entitlement and disappointment that the money was no longer coming their way.
