In a recent conversation on Lil Yachty's "A Safe Place" podcast, Dr. Umar Johnson discusses the beauty standards imposed on Black women by European ideals and the consequences of these standards. Around the 1:15:00 mark, he points out that Black women spend more money on cosmetics than any other group in America, per capita of their population. This, he argues, stems from a long history of being told they are ugly, from the time of slavery to the present day.

Johnson goes on to highlight the impact of these beauty standards on the self-esteem of Black women. This led to Lil Yachty stating that many women make decisions, like getting BBLs, to change their appearance not just to attract men, but to impress their friends and boost their own self-esteem. Johnson also addresses the issue of sexual objectification of Black women, pointing out that they are disproportionately targeted in sex trafficking rings.

This led to a debate between Lil Yachty and Dr. Umar, which you can check out in full above.
