Parker grew up in a basketball environment in Brooklyn, with both his parents playing the game to some extent, instilling the passion in him from an early age. He shared how he acquired his nickname 'Smush,' which was passed down to him by his father through a family tradition. Despite not being heavily recruited and having good grades in high school, a series of connections steered him toward a basketball career. This eventually led to him playing for the Detroit Pistons, where he witnessed the infamous 'Malice at the Palace' brawl between his teammates and the Indiana Pacers, specifically Ben Wallace and Ron Artest.
