To win back the presidency in the upcoming US election on November 5, former President Trump appealed to the justices to halt a ruling made by a three-judge panel of the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit on February 6.

The ruling had rejected his claim of immunity from prosecution. In a brief submitted to the Supreme Court, Trump's legal team cautioned that holding a lengthy criminal trial against President Trump during the peak of election season would significantly disrupt his campaign efforts against President Joe Biden. They requested the justices to temporarily suspend the trial proceedings while they seek a reconsideration of the case by the full slate of judges on the DC Circuit, and potentially file an appeal to the Supreme Court if needed.

A trial date scheduled for March 4 in federal court in Washington, involving four criminal counts pursued by Special Counsel Jack Smith against Trump, has already been postponed with no new date set.
