U.S. Coast Guard Seize Over a Ton of Cocaine Worth $32M Near Florida

On Tuesday, the crew of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Margaret Norvell successfully seized over a ton of cocaine, valued at more than $32.2 million, in two separate incidents within the international waters of the Caribbean Sea. The operations resulted in the apprehension of six smugglers, as reported by authorities.

The United States Coast Guard released a statement acknowledging the commendable efforts of the Coast Guard crews and their agency partners in executing these interdictions. Lt. Cmdr. Colin Weaver, Commanding Officer, expressed gratitude, stating, "Thanks to the tremendous efforts of the Coast Guard crews and agency partners involved with this interdiction, Coast Guard Cutter Margaret Norvell brought these suspected smugglers and illicit contraband ashore for prosecution." Weaver emphasized the Coast Guard's commitment to vital missions of homeland and maritime security, thwarting transnational criminal organizations in the Caribbean and saving lives.

The arrested individuals, now facing federal prosecution, will be handled by the Department of Justice, in line with Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) designated investigations. The OCDETF employs a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach to identify, disrupt, and dismantle high-level criminal organizations posing a threat to the United States.

The successful seizures involved the collaborative efforts of crews from the USCG Cutter Richard Dixon, the USCG Cutter Dauntless, and the Joint Interagency Task Force South. Officials highlighted the significance of interagency and international coordination in detecting and interdicting illegal drug traffickers on the high seas. The Joint Interagency Task Force South, based in Key West, Florida, played a crucial role in monitoring the transit of illegal drugs. Once interdiction became imminent, the U.S. Coast Guard assumed control of the operations, leading the law enforcement phase of the operation in the Caribbean Sea under the authority and control of the Coast Guard's Seventh District, headquartered in Miami.
