Dennis Schroder is shedding light on one of the most perplexing contract decisions in NBA history, explaining why he turned down an offer exceeding $80 million from the Lakers, only to later sign a contract worth less than $6 million.
His previous agent advised him to decline the highly lucrative Lakers offer, a move that drew criticism when the star point guard rejected a 4-year, $84 million deal with the Purple and Gold in 2021, hoping for a better opportunity elsewhere.
Unfortunately, a more lucrative offer did not materialize, and Schroder ultimately inked a deal with the Celtics for $5.9 million. Reflecting on the situation, he told Yahoo Sports, "I would've signed it. I would never just leave money on the table. My mom didn’t raise me that way."
Despite facing scrutiny for what some consider a significant financial misstep in NBA history, Schroder acknowledged the challenge of going from an $84 million offer to a $6 million deal. Nevertheless, he emphasized gratitude for the wealth he has accumulated and the fulfillment of family life with his wife Ellen and their children.
Schroder, currently performing well with the Raptors on a 2-year, $25.4 million deal, expressed his intention to continue playing into his 40s, believing he still has a substantial amount of talent and energy left in his career.
