Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton addressed reporters on Friday regarding the benching of quarterback Russell Wilson, maintaining that it was a football-related decision. However, moments later, Wilson contradicted Payton's narrative.
Although Wilson was not initially scheduled to speak to the media, he seized the opportunity in the locker room to confirm reports that the Broncos' front office informed him he would be benched for the remaining nine games unless he agreed to postpone a contract trigger that guaranteed his 2025 salary. Wilson explained, "They came up to me during the bye week and, beginning of the bye week, Monday or Tuesday, they told me if I didn’t change my contract, my injury guarantee, that I’d be benched the rest of the year." Expressing disappointment, Wilson highlighted the discussions that occurred throughout the bye week and the involvement of the NFLPA and NFL at some point.
The 35-year-old quarterback openly shared his feelings on the situation, acknowledging the predicament tied to his $37 million salary for 2025, which becomes fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2024 league year, starting March 13. Wilson's mention of the NFL and NFLPA drew attention, as neither organization had publicly acknowledged or been involved in his situation. Reportedly, lawyers from the players union were consulted before Wilson decided against altering his contract.
Diana Russini of The Athletic reported that Wilson has been anticipating the Broncos cutting him in March for the past two months. Despite this, he expressed his desire to remain in Denver, stating, "I came here to play here, to win. I knew it was going to be a process. I signed a seven-year deal. I want to be here, I want to play here, I want to win championships here."
Payton, however, continues to assert that Wilson's demotion is solely aimed at winning games, claiming he is not privy to conversations between Wilson and the front office. The head coach emphasized the importance of reaching the eighth win, while Wilson, a nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback, has amassed 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns, eight interceptions, and a 98 passer rating in the current season.
