Oakland pays tribute to Tupac Shakur by dedicating a section of MacArthur Boulevard to the iconic rapper. The stretch between Van Buren and Grand avenues has been officially named Tupac Shakur Way, a move celebrated during a ceremony attended by family, friends, and fans.
Rapper Richey Rich Double R expressed Tupac's deep affection for Oakland, where he began his musical journey with Digital Underground and penned his first album. However, it's not just his musical legacy that's remembered but also the profound impact of his messages and activism.
"He's a leader, he's an innovator, his duality, his fight for the people," remarked radio personality Sway Calloway. Rapper E-40 acknowledged Tupac's significant influence, praising him as the greatest rapper and emphasizing his advocacy for their culture.
The unanimous decision to rename the road was made by the Oakland City Council, spearheaded by Councilmember Caroll Fife. The emotional tribute was especially poignant for Tupac's family. His siblings expressed hope that the street bearing their brother's name would be a safe haven for the community.
Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, Tupac's sister, shared plans to install a peace pole at the location, symbolizing a legacy of love and peace in Oakland—a vision Tupac passionately championed during his lifetime.
