In a recent interview on Math Hoffa's "My Expert Opinion," legendary rapper Erick Sermon revealed an interesting piece of hip-hop history involving 50 Cent. Sermon explained that before becoming a household name, Fif was almost signed to his label Death Squad. The revelation sheds light on the early days of 50 Cent's career and his connection to the East New York rap scene.
According to Sermon, 50 Cent, or Curtis Jackson as he was known back then, used to frequent Sermon's house regularly. Sermon's neighbor Cory, who was affiliated with Sony and The Trackmasters, brought the young rapper to Sermon's crib. 50 Cent would then collaborate with Sermon on records, including "Da Heatwave."
Interestingly, "Da Heatwave" was released as 50 Cent's first single before he encountered the life-altering shooting incident. The track featured a memorable outro with 50 Cent shouting, "Eric Sermon, Def Squad baby!" While the collaboration was fruitful, fate had other plans for 50 Cent's career trajectory.
