A recent study has revealed that criminals are breaking into an average of 55 cars every single day in San Francisco. However, thanks to a new strategy by the police, that number is gradually decreasing. The use of bait cars has played a significant role in the reduction of car burglaries in the city.
Police sources have confirmed that any arrest made using a bait car has a major impact. Typically, a criminal will break into several cars in a single day. However, even with an arrest, the problem does not completely disappear. Recent incidents have shown that arrested criminals can be back on the streets in a short period of time, continuing their criminal activities.
One couple from Indiana experienced the devastating consequences of car burglaries while visiting San Francisco. After touring Alcatraz prison, they returned to their rental car to find their luggage stolen. The police were able to recover their luggage but informed the couple that their computers had most likely been sent to an Asian country. Just three days later, the couple's iPad was traced to Vietnam, located thousands of miles away.
The police have apprehended a man responsible for this particular incident, along with other car break-ins in the city. The suspect, Robert Sansa, has a long criminal record and had been arrested multiple times before. Despite previous convictions for car burglary, grand theft, hit and run, and shoplifting, Sansa was only given probation. The leniency shown towards criminals like Sansa has raised concerns among the public.
In response to the escalating car burglary issue, the San Francisco Police Department announced a new bait car campaign. The aim is to catch more criminals in the act and prosecute them more aggressively to send a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated.
