In a shocking turn of events, a Department of Defense official and another individual have been charged with operating a clandestine dog fighting ring. Frederick Moorefield, who worked in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, has been named in a federal criminal complaint, along with his co-defendant Mario Flythe.
The allegations come from a disturbing story out of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Investigators executed search warrants at Moorefield's residence, which caught the attention of neighbors due to the suspicious activity. A video shared by one neighbor revealed the presence of law enforcement officers at Moorefield's home.
According to the federal complaint, Moorefield and Flythe used an encrypted messaging application to communicate with individuals across the country to discuss their illegal dogfighting activities. Law enforcement officials also seized evidence from the location, including veterinary steroids, training schedules, stained carpet believed to be bloodstains, and a device used for the execution of dogs that lost fights.
Animal rights groups fighting against animal cruelty have raised concerns about the prevalence of animal fighting rings. One group leader mentioned their involvement in the high-profile 2007 case of former NFL quarterback Michael Vick.
