The US Army private who intentionally ran into North Korea, one of the most repressive nations on Earth, is now safely back in US custody after more than two months. While on a public tour of the joint security area that separates North and South Korea, Travis King raced across the DMZ (demilitarized zone) on his own accord. This rare move by North Korea, in releasing King comes as a surprise considering their brutal record on human rights.
According to senior Biden administration officials, it resulted from months of intense diplomacy involving the US, North Korea, Sweden, and other countries. Sweden, serving as a protected power, conducted negotiations since the US doesn't have an embassy in Pyongyang. The release of King marks the culmination of these efforts.
Although concerns were raised about King being used for propaganda or his health deteriorating, he has reportedly been found in good health and happy to be reunited with his family. There are still unanswered questions about what North Korea might have gained in exchange. However, US officials claim no concessions were made.
King was taken from North Korea to China and flew to South Korea before his final journey home to the United States. Upon arriving in the US, King will be evaluated and treated at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas for both mental and physical reasons.
Moving forward, there are potential disciplinary procedures concerning King's prior assault in South Korea that must be addressed. However, the US Army has stated they will only address these issues after King fully recovers.
This release raises questions about US-North Korea relations and their unwillingness to converse with the US. While some suggest offering economic support and putting more humanity on the table, the Biden administration is not currently pursuing this route. The situation with North Korea is expected to worsen, with increased missile and nuclear weapon development, further aligning themselves with adversaries of the US.
