In the early hours of September 24, 2023, an officer-involved shooting took place in Dallas, Texas. The incident began when covert officers spotted a stolen vehicle traveling westbound on Garland Road, with a paper tag that didn't match the vehicle. The officers followed the car to the 1800 block of El Capitan, where uniformed officers were requested to respond.

As the uniformed officers arrived at the scene, 55-year-old suspect Michael Shirley, who was outside the stolen vehicle, ignored verbal commands to halt and show his hands. Shirley instead pulled out a handgun and opened fire on the officers. In self-defense, the officers returned fire.

Shirley then got back into the stolen vehicle and fled northbound on El Capitan. He cut through a nearby apartment complex and emerged eastbound on Barnes Bridge. However, in his attempt to escape, Shirley crashed the stolen car in the 2000 block of Barnes Bridge, flipping the vehicle.

Covert officers, who witnessed the crash, saw Shirley approach the car. The officers, wearing their heavy vests with police markings, deployed their patrol rifles, as Shirley once again began firing shots at them. Taking cover behind a vehicle, the officers returned fire, ultimately hitting the suspect.

Shirley was taken into custody, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Police recovered his firearm from the scene. A woman, who had been handcuffed and held in the backseat of the vehicle, was found unharmed and is not considered a suspect. She stated that she willingly got into the car with Shirley but was then forcibly restrained.

Shirley had an extensive criminal history, including past prison time for indecency with a child. At the time of the chase and shooting, he had active warrants for his arrest.
