According to studies, there are over 30,000 crocodiles in Mississippi. Because the state has restrictions and guidelines that persevere the population, gators in the area become much larger than their relatives in other states. However, alligator hunting is allowed on a seasonal basis. Typically, as long as residents of the state purchase two licenses (private lands permit & alligator hunting license), they can hunt gators starting on the last Friday of August. Four hunters from the area kicked hunting season off with a bang when they captured an 802-pound gator that measured over fourteen feet in length, making it the largest in the state's history. The Gator also had a belly circumference of approximately 66 inches. The kill has also sparked controversy between hunters and animal rights activists.
