In a recent interview, former professional boxer Shane Mosley shed some light on his decision to fight Floyd Mayweather towards the end of his career. Mosley explained that he had initially hesitated to fight Mayweather due to a toothache he was experiencing at the time. After defeating another opponent, Mosley mentioned his toothache during a post-fight interview, leading to speculation that he was avoiding Mayweather.
However, Mosley also revealed that back when he was in the lightweight division (135 pounds), Mayweather had no interest in fighting him. Mosley, who was an interviewer for ESPN at the time, asked Mayweather if he would consider a fight in the 135-pound division, to which Mayweather declined. Mosley explained that he knew he was moving up to the welterweight division (147 pounds) to challenge Oscar De La Hoya, as he could no longer make the lightweight limit.
Mosley emphasized that there were no serious negotiations or discussions between their camps to make the fight happen earlier in their careers. It was only when Mosley got in the ring after one of Mayweather's fights, with Bernard Hopkins instigating the confrontation, that the possibility of a fight between them gained momentum.
