A mother has filed a lawsuit against Southwest Airlines for racial discrimination after she and her biracial child were accused of human trafficking during a flight.

Mary McCarthy, a white woman, was traveling with her daughter from California to Denver to attend her brother's funeral in October 2021. According to the lawsuit, while in the air, a Southwest employee reported McCarthy to the Denver police for suspected child trafficking solely based on the difference in skin color between McCarthy and her daughter. After significant questioning, McCarthy was eventually allowed to leave by the police officers.

McCarthy decided to speak out about the incident to raise awareness about racial profiling and the need for change. She is seeking unspecified damages, an apology from the airline, and mandatory training to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. McCarthy emphasizes that racial profiling has no place in today's society and hopes that her lawsuit will lead to positive changes and reduce racism for families like hers.
