According to reports, Mark DeFriest, "The Houdini of Florida," holds the all-time record for the most prison escapes with seven. So, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman has some ways to go before he inches closer to the recording-breaking mark, having only escaped from two prisons. The former drug lord of the Sinaloa Cartel is serving a life sentence at the ADX Florence maximum prison in the frigid mountains of Colorado, where investigators recently transcribed a letter from El Chapo to a judge in English. The text outlines his suspicion about SuperMax officials, who he believes fear that he is planning the third "prison break" of his infamous career.

"They always use the excuse that it's because Guzman fled from a Mexican prison," El Chapo wrote. "This is a ridiculous claim [used to] justify the anomalies."

Built in 1994, no inmate has ever escaped ADX Florence Maximum Prison, a facility that has become known as the "Alcatraz of the Rockies."

Since his incarnation in 2019, El Chapo has been working with his legal team to fight for his freedom. During this time, he has claimed that SuperMax officials have been mistreating him due to overwhelming fear that he is planning a grand escape.
