According to reports, a manatee named "Hugh" has passed away due to a traumatic sexual encounter with his brother, Buffett. The incident occurred at the Mote Marine Laboratory in Florida after the two siblings had lived together in the same enclosure for nearly 27 years. Results from the autopsy revealed that Hugh died from a gash in his colon that was approximately 14.5 centimeters long. Before rectal penetration occurred, the siblings were seen interacting with one another in a sexual manner. This has ignited pushback from animal rights activists who believe that the Mote Marine Laboratory could have protected Hugh better once they saw how the aquatic animals were interacting. The U.S. Department of Agriculture came to the same conclusion upon its investigation into the matter. Nonetheless, shortly after Hugh's passing, the Mote Marine Laboratory released a statement on Facebook.

"On the day of Hugh’s passing, Hugh and Buffett engaged in natural, yet increased, mating behavior observed and documented in manatees both in managed care and in the wild," reads the statement. "This was the first time such heightened mating behavior was witnessed between the two manatees. However, each year, like other male manatees in both the wild and in managed care, Hugh and Buffett would exhibit approximately two months of seasonal behavioral changes including, but not limited to, an increase in sexual behavior."
