Twenty-four years ago, at the 1999 X Games in San Francisco, pro skater Tony Hawk added to his growing legacy during the "Skateboard Vert Best Trick" contest by completing the world's first 900 on record. The man many pundits consider to be amongst the greatest of all time took numerous attempts to accomplish the historic feat while his fellow competitors like Bucky Lasek watched in awe. Tony Hawk's unparalleled maneuver occurred during an era in skateboarding when two-and-a-half spins in mid-air were practically unfathomable to the mainstream. Unlike some of today's pro skaters, such as Nyjah Huston and Gui Khury, Tony Hawk did not get to compete in the celebrated biennial event during the peak of his athleticism in his late teens and early twenties because the event did not exist yet. Nevertheless, the trailblazer won multiple Gold Medals at the inaugural X-Games in 1995 before establishing a record (with 16 medals) for nearly three decades until Andy McDonald surpassed the mark during this year's festivities.
With Tony Hawk (55) and Andy McDonald (49) partaking in the 2023 X-Games, a 14-year-old named Gui Khury continues to soar atop the record books. Over the weekend, the pro skater from Brazil won the "Skateboard Vert Best Trick" event in a dramatic fashion by landing a Judo 900 to the delight of the attendees at Ventura Country Fairgrounds and ESPN's on-air commentators. Two years ago, Khury made history by landing the first-ever 1080 en route to becoming the youngest pro skater to win the "Skateboard Vert Best Trick" event--a category that pitted him against his idol Tony Hawk.
For Gui Khury, breaking records has become a recurring theme since 2019, when he etched his name in X-Games history as the event's youngest entrant (at ten years old). This year, Tony Hawk joined him from the opposite end of the spectrum as the oldest pro skater to enter the competition. Although it may take Khury a long while to eclipse Tony Hawk's career gold medal count in X-Games history, additions to the young prodigy's trophy case steadily increase every other Summer.
Scroll up to watch Gui Khury make history once again.
