Recently, Emory Jones—Head of Lifestyle at Roc Nation and close friend of Jay-Z, spoke about the loyalty he built with the legendary rapper while behind bars.

Jones spoke to ‘Ear Pollution’ and reflected on how he told Jay-Z the rapper didn’t owe him anything while he spent over 10 years locked up on drug charges. In 2000, Jones was sentenced to 16 years in prison after pleading guilty to drug distribution. “From day one, the main thing I did to set the tone was when I used to call home I would tell my brothers, ‘Y’all don’t owe me nothing.’ It start there. What we did for each other, we did from [the heart],” said Emory.

Jones spoke about how to keep your mindset clear while in the system, saying, “So once you clear that slate coming from me, that’s that balance right there. I can’t look at it like you and the world owe me something. That’s where we go wrong when we go in the system.”

Emory then talked about how Jay-Z bigged him up on the song “Do U Wanna Ride” from his ‘Kingdom Come’ album, saying the song was a “tear-jerker.” Take a look above.
