Despite conflicting beliefs, Florida allows its residents to own exotic animals like raccoons and alligators, provided a permit is obtained. Other Southern states, such as Arkansas and Texas, have similar rules regarding animals like these. Although a Floridian can own a raccoon, it is not recommended because they have been known to carry and shed infectious diseases that can transfer to humans and household pets such as dogs and cats. However, if you can manage to domestic one, raccoons can make for excellent trainees because their IQ levels are nearly as high as elephants, dolphins, and apes.

Earlier this week, a video went viral of a Floridian man playing outside with his pet raccoon "Swiper." The footage begins with the man looking into a car window before introducing "Swiper" and putting on an impromptu show with his furry little friend. The demonstration displayed the duo's rapport while also showing their audience how adaptable and intelligent raccoons are.
