Doctors worldwide have grown accustomed to encountering patients with bizarre health emergencies occasionally, but in 2018 a medical team at Tan Tock Seng Hospital came across a predicament far more unusual than most peculiar instances. A 55-year-old entered their hospital in need of medical attention regarding throat pain. According to reports, he had been regurgitating repeatedly since consuming a seafood meal containing an octopus. So, the medics performed an esophageal manometry to examine his throat and stomach. This led to a mind-blowing discovery.
The scan revealed that the patient had an octopus stuck near his gastroesophageal junction (an area between the esophagus and the stomach). The revelation ignited a medical procedure that prompted the team to use forceps and an endoscope to remove the eight-legged sea creature. The patient was released from the hospital two days after the octopus was removed from his body.
