Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was released twelve days ago to critical acclaim and historical box office results. The follow-up to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) has already grossed more than the original film ever did. Last weekend, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts overtook Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse for the top spot in the Box Office. Nevertheless, "Spider-Verse 2" is approaching the $400 million mark in box office total as the rave reviews continue from media heavyweights such as Rotten Tomatoes and Roger Ebert.
With fan-fueled theories about the endless possibilities of the Sony-made film running wild, many have suggested that Miles Morales' love interest, Gwen Stacy, is transgender. There's a scene in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, where Gwen is sitting in her room underneath a flag in the upper-righthand corner that reads, "Protect Trans Kids." To add to the speculation, her father, a police captain named George Stacy, also has a transgender flag sewn into the shoulder section of his uniform. These nuggets aren't easy to spot, but enough fans have, and this has sparked heated debates between those who have already begun to claim her character as a part of the LGBTQ community and those who are quick to point out her origin in the comic books.
Yesterday, a Twitter user made a post regarding the "Is Gwen Stacy Trans?" debate, and it has since been viewed over 2 million times.
"This whole "Gwen Stacy is or isn't trans" argument strikes me as more of a 'viewers not knowing how to read movies' thing," he wrote. "It can simply be [an] allegory to facilitate classic Spider-Man coming-of-age & outsider identity themes. It's subjective subtext, not a legitimate plot point."
As of now, the executive producers at Sony have yet to confirm or deny Gwen Stacy's gender identity publically.
